Lawren Harris [1885-1970]. Canadian artist Lawren Harris is best known as a member of the Group of Seven, and is considered the main driving force that brought together and joined the varying talents and temperaments which formed the Group. He was also the founder of the now famous Canadian Group of Painters which succeeded the Group of Seven in 1933.

Harris was keenly interested in the changing urban landscape of Toronto as the city grew throughout the 1920s. His use of linear perspective and open space creates a sense of depth that draws the viewer’s eye to the houses down the street. The artist uses complementary colours and bright light to convey warmth and tranquility despite the snow-covered ground and bare trees.
